Injured worker ordered to pay $2,778 in restitution and sentenced to probation.

A Vale man has been sentenced to 18 months probation and ordered to pay $2,778 in restitution to SAIF Corporation for workers’ compensation fraud.

Jesse C. Malchow was sentenced in Malheur County Circuit Court after pleading guilty in March to Theft in the Second Degree.

Malchow was a mechanic for a local dairy when he suffered a job-related chest injury when he fell from a tractor. SAIF later learned that Malchow was working at his personal business, a second hand store in Vale, even though his doctor had determined that Malchow was unable to work due to his injury.

By misrepresenting his condition to his doctor, Malchow received $2,778 in workers’ compensation benefits to which he was not entitled.

SAIF is Oregon’s largest workers’ compensation insurer with 35,000 policyholders. SAIF’s anti-fraud program has saved the company and its policyholders an estimated $23 Million since 1990.

SAIF maintains a confidential toll free telephone number (1-800-282-8822) which the public may use to report fraud cases. Fraud can also be reported over the internet by e-mailing fraud@saif.com.
